Snack smarter, not less - how to beat the mid-afternoon slump...

Do you find, like me, that you tend to eat more in bad weather?
Dont despair - apparently it's natural to experience a higher appetite during bad or cold weather. This is driven by a combination of physiological needs to maintain body temperature, behavioural changes (such as staying inside), and psychological desires for comfort food.

We all know the feeling - It’s mid-afternoon, your energy dips, focus fades, and suddenly anything sweet or salty becomes fair game.

This isn’t a lack of willpower — it’s biology.

Why the 3pm slump happens
Most “quick snacks” — biscuits, chips, sugary bars — cause a rapid spike in blood sugar, followed by an equally fast crash.
That crash leaves you feeling tired, hungry, and reaching for more. It’s a cycle. And most office environments fuel it.
I find that even a mid-morning fruit spikes my blood-sugar and cravings, unless I moderate it with some protein like a handful of nuts, or leftover animal protein, a piece of biltong etc.

The simple fix: snack smarter, not less
The goal isn’t to stop snacking — it’s to snack better.
A smart snack keeps your energy stable, your brain sharp, and your cravings under control.

The winning formula
Every effective snack should include at least two of these three:

  • Protein – keeps you full and supports energy (nuts, yogurt, eggs, biltong)
  • Fibre – slows digestion and stabilises blood sugar (fruit, oats, seeds, veg)
  • Healthy fats – provide sustained energy (nuts, nut butters, avocado)

Easy snack upgrades
Make these swaps:

  • Biscuits → Apple + peanut butter
  • Chips → Nuts + dried fruit
  • Chocolate bar → Dark chocolate + almonds
  • Sugary yogurt → Plain yogurt + berries

Small swaps, big difference.

Timing matters too
Don’t wait until you’re starving.
A planned snack between meals helps prevent overeating and keeps your energy consistent through the day.

The bottom line - Smart snacking isn’t about restriction — it’s about better choices.

When you combine protein, fibre, and healthy fats, you:

  • Avoid energy crashes
  • Improve focus and productivity
  • Stay fuller for longer

And most importantly — you feel better.
